Safe Anesthesia Practice

Unsafe surgery and related care can do potential harm. The crude mortality rate after major surgeries can be as high as 0.5% to 5%. Sugical complications in inhouse patients can occur in up to 25% of cases; and at least, half of these are considered preventable. But these are the numbers from developed countries. In a developing country like India, these numbers are sugnificantly large.

Anesthesia may be either solely responsible or may contribute to perioperative mortality. The World Health organization (WHO) estimates that at least half of all surgical complications are avoidable and has made Safe Surgery Saves Lives the Second Global Patient Safety Challenge. The four areas in which dramatic improvements could be made in the safety of surgical care include surgical site infection prevention, safe anaesthesia, safe surgical teams and measurement of surgical services.

In Indian scenario, where cost factor is a major constraint, Safe Anesthesia Practice is often neglected. But it actually does more harm than saving costs. The experience of bad anesthesia, for example, anesthesia awareness can be really traumatic and haunt the patient for years. It may even lead to psychological disorders like anxiety, flashbacks and post traumatic stress disorders.

To prevent malpractice of anesthesia and promote Safe Anesthesia Practice, the International Standards for a Safe Practice of Anesthesia were developed in 2018 on behalf of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA), a nonprofit organization representing anesthesiologists in 150 countries, and WHO. The Standards cover professional aspects; facilities and equipment; medications and intravenous fluids; monitoring; and the conduct of anesthesia.
